Manet est l'un des plus célèbres artistes de l. a. seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, lié aux impressionnistes sans faire vraiment partie de leur groupe. Il se forma auprès de Thomas Couture, un peintre académique, mais c'est grâce à ses nombreux voyages à travers l'Europe qu'il entreprit dès 1852, qu'il commença à se faire une idée de ce qu'allait être son kind propre.
Ses premières peintures étaient essentiellement des scènes de style, inspirées par son amour pour les maîtres espagnols comme Velazquez et Goya, et le portrait. C'est en 1863 qu'il présenta son chef-d'œuvre Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe au Salon des refusés. Son œuvre déclenchant une polémique entre les défenseurs de l'art académique et les jeunes artistes «refusés », il devint le chef de dossier de cette nouvelle génération d'artistes.
A partir de 1864, le salon officiel accepta ses travaux, provoquant toujours de véhémentes protestations comme ce fut le cas avec Olympia en 1865. En 1866, l'écrivain Zola écrivit un article en faveur du travail de Manet. A cette époque, le peintre était ami avec tous les futurs grands maîtres impressionnistes : Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro et Paul Cézanne, qui s'influençaient les uns les autres ; pourtant il restait délibérément à l'extérieur du groupe. En effet, en 1874 il refusa de présenter ses peintures lors de leur première exposition. Sa dernière apparition dans un salon officiel fut en 1882 avec Un Bar aux Folies-Bergère, l'une de ses œuvres les plus connues. Atteint par los angeles gangrène au cours de l'année 1883, il peignit des natures mortes de fleurs jusqu'au second où il ne s'en sentit plus able, et il mourut en laissant derrière lui un grand nombre de dessins et de peintures.

Eine Malerei, die nicht mehr auf ornamentalen Farbenreiz, sondern auf wirkliche phantasm, auf frappante Naturwahrheit ausging, brauchte andere technische Instrumente als die, worüber die mittelalterliche Kunst verfügte. guy mußte imstande sein, die Stofflichkeit der Dinge, die Weichheit der Modellierung, die Zartheit der Übergänge, die Durchsichtigkeit der Schatten, das Spiel der Reflexlichter, kurz alles das, was once für eine dekorativ stilisierende Kunst noch überhaupt in Frage gekommen battle, malerisch auszudrücken. Alles glitzert und strahlt in seinen Bildern. Mit Edelsteinen und Perlen ist die dreifache Tiara Gott-Vaters geschmückt, mit Rubinen und Amethysten der Saum des Gewandes geziert. Das Zepter funkelt und gleißt. Eine schillernde Königskrone ist zu Füßen des Königs der Könige gelegt. Von einem reich ornamentierten Teppich hebt seine rotleuchtende Gestalt sich ab. Die drei anderen Tafeln zeigen ganz die nämliche Farbenpracht. Diese blauen und grünen Mäntel, die in lodernder Glut die Gestalten Marias und des Täufers umfließen, diese schimmernde, mit metallischen Lilien geschmückte Krone der Madonna, diese Edelsteine, die im Gewände des Täufers gleißen, wie die schweren Brokatkleider der Engel, die glitzernden Agraffen, das Glänzen des Eichenholzes und das Funkeln der Orgel hätte ein Früherer vergebens zu malen versucht. Ebenso unerhört ist die plastische Modellierung. In wuchtiger Körperhaftigkeit sitzen die Gestalten da. Während die mittelalterliche Kunst nur den linear umrissenen, mit Farbe ausgefüllten Querschnitt der Dinge gab, weiß Hubert den Eindruck des Volumens dermaßen fühlbar zu machen, daß die Figuren wie Blöcke wirken, die guy glaubt umtasten zu können.

Daß er andererseits mit der mittelalterlichen Kunst noch durch starke Fäden verbunden ist, darf guy freilich auch nicht verkennen. Quattrocentistisch an ihm ist, daß er die Dinge ....
