Doch dazu kommt es nicht, und – noch seltsamer – Curtius selbst hat das Werk nie mehr erwähnt. Erst 2008 wurde es zufällig entdeckt und erscheint hier zum ersten Mal. Anfang 1932 veröffentlichte Ernst Robert Curtius (1886 - 1956) seine polemische Schrift Deutscher Geist in Gefahr. Danach, so schien es, schrieb er nur noch Aufsätze und publizierte erst 1948 wieder ein großes Werk: Europäische Literatur und lateinisches Mittelalter. Niemand wusste, dass er 1932 ein weiteres Buch verfasst hat: Elemente der Bildung. Seiner Warnung vor der Zerstörung der abendländischen Bildungstraditionen sollte damit ein positives Bildungskonzept folgen – doch es kam anders. Die sorgfältige version macht Curtius’ Buch erstmals der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. In einem Nachwort geht Ernst-Peter Wieckenberg der Frage nach, welche persönlichen und politischen Umstände das Erscheinen verhindert haben. Er verortet das Buch in Curtius’ Denken und den Debatten der Zeit und zeigt eindrucksvoll, wie sich ein deutscher Geisteswissenschaftler gegen die ideologische Vereinnahmung der Bildung stemmte und dabei selbst im Strom der Ideologien mitschwamm.
